Seeing With The Heart
Brian Green-Young Honors Charlie LeCornu
If you had driven through Vardaman, Mississippi during Charlie LeCornu's lifetime, you might have missed it altogether. Yet for Brian Green Young, that small town is forever connected to a front porch and the grandfather who shaped his life.
Charlie came from a family known locally for its timber business and general store. But titles and accomplishments are not what Brian remembers most. He remembers sitting beside his grandfather while pipe smoke drifted through the air. Nearby sat orange slice candy and King Leo peppermints. Even today those sights and smells take him back.
What makes those memories remarkable is that Charlie had gone blind only a year before Brian was born. One day while driving home, everything suddenly went black. Yet Brian never remembers bitterness. He remembers steadiness.
Charlie adapted. He carried a cane, dressed neatly, stayed active, and continued serving others.
His vision, it turned out, had never depended entirely on his eyes.
During a time when racial divisions defined much of Mississippi life, Charlie treated people with dignity. He bought hamburgers from a Black-owned diner despite criticism. He helped extend water service to a Black neighborhood when many opposed the effort. Doing the right thing mattered more than doing the popular thing.
Years later, during a difficult season, Brian dreamed he was back on that familiar porch. Charlie was there. In the dream he could see again. They talked for a long while, and before the dream ended Charlie offered a simple reassurance: "It's going to be all right, son."
For all the roles Charlie occupied, perhaps his greatest legacy was simpler. He taught those around him how to see people with kindness, dignity, and respect.
